As many have criticized of new Who, the sonic screwdriver has become the Doctor’s number one signature gadget. Starting out from a device in the second Doctor’s run that actually unscrewed screws, it now hacks electronic interfaces, unlocks things, ignites objects, and scans them. While this saves lots of plot-time, it also deprives the writers of chances to think up innovative solutions around these problems.
